NCSA IBM pSeries 690 Systems going to Friendly User Mode

NCSA User Community:

Following my note from October, we are preparing to bring the new NCSA IBM p690
systems to a Friendly User mode. As noted previously, to upgrade our SMP
computing capability, NCSA has decided to purchase a set of IBM pSeries 690
systems. See:
     http://www.ibm.com/servers/eserver/pseries/hardware/tour/690_briefing.html

There are 12 32-processor systems configured as follows:

All systems will have:
  32 IBM POWER4 Processors (1.3GHz, 5.2Gflop/s)
  64 GBytes RAM
   4 2x FiberChannel interfaces
   4 Gigabit Ethernet (GigE) interfaces

For 4 of the systems, we are configuring them with additional memory to bring
them up to 256 GBytes total each.

More details regarding the systems at NCSA are available at:
    http://www.ncsa.uiuc.edu/UserInfo/Resources/Hardware/IBMp690/

For general information about the IBM pSeries 690 system, see:
    http://www.ibm.com/servers/eserver/pseries/hardware/tour/690_briefing.html

We have made a web form available to request Friendly User access to the NCSA
systems. This form is available at:
    http://www.ncsa.uiuc.edu/UserInfo/Allocations/IBMP690FrUserProjectForm.html

We are working to put the systems into Friendly User mode over the next few
days and will begin adding projects and accounts at that time. We ask for your
patience as we add projects and accounts over the next several weeks.

If you should have any questions, please feel free to direct them to myself,
John Towns <jtowns@ncsa.edu> or to the NCSA Consulting Office, consult@ncsa.edu
(217-244-1144).

Regards,
John Towns
