Derek,

Well, I think its related because all our machines that displayed these 
losses were using Intel gigabit NICs & e1000 driver. They were all 
totally fixed by a change to different manufacturer NIC. I don't know 
whether its the chipset itself or the driver which is the problem.

Bearing in mind Mitch's "bad" data point (machine appears to show the 
problem, but doesn't use the Intel NIC) and our own couter-example 
(which initially exhibited the problem, but has recently cleared up 
without further intervention), is it possible to install a different 
brand NIC as a test (possibly not a 3Com like Mitch is using)?
