Friendly User release of Beacon 0.9.54 RC1
Hi, folks -- Ok, the first pass of Friendly User season on the new Beacon
is now
officially *open*!
I'll be making the release official at the upcoming AGR'04 next week in
Toronto, but thought you'd like a headsup now, and a chance to play with
things early.
Please get as many Beacons up and running as you can between now and next
week, if you could.
In particular, any comments/feedback/suggestions about the installation
process for the new Beacon are especially appreciated, as I want this to be
as smooth and as painless for novice users as possible,
Thanks!

Known issues at the moment:
1) There's a bug with the RTT computations that we're still sorting out,
but we're very close on. We expect to have it fixed sometime next week, so
expect an update release very soon.
2) There's a big-endian/little-endian problem in the underlying RTP library
with Beacons running under the PowerPC darwin OS that causes the stats
generated to sometimes be bizarre. We expect to have that sorted out
shortly as well.
3) For now, the Central Server will be beacon.ncsa.uiuc.edu, but once
things are fairly solid, I'll be moving the official Central Server over to
beacon.dast.nlanr.net, so be prepared for the change when it comes.
Let me know what you find, any difficulties you encounter, what you like,
what you don't like, and any suggestions you have for improvements. Please
don't be shy.
Thanks for helping out, and I look forward to your feedback!
Mitch
