3-D Colliding Black Holes

Horizon and Gravitational Wave Evolution

The head-on collision of two equal mass black holes has been computed in 3D and displayed here. The horizons are shown as the green surfaces which fall together and merge as a single larger black hole is formed. The resulting gravitational waves are shown as a blue and yellow color map on the two slice-planes, with a ring shaped lobe of waves emerging in full 3D. This movie shows the same 2D, axisymmetric colliding black hole calculation shown above, but now in full 3D.
