Effects (or "Fx")
Let's say you're putting together a short movie on storms or earthquakes, but the footage you've acquired lacks audio. Perhaps the deep rumble of thunder or of the ground shaking might help get your point across. You may need to to purchase audio effects from a library. The costs can be quite reasonable, and often, you can buy sounds that have already been digitized. You can even browse such sounds on the web before you commit. Several production houses offer web sites for just this purpose. (Link to an appropriate menu of URLs?)
Insert and link to an example of effects from Microburst Alert – e.g. microburst time lapse with sample roaring (need to ask Juhan about this?)
Or you might record your own sounds, then process and mix them digitally, using special software on your desktop computer. The capabilities of such sound processing software continue to expand while the price keeps tumbling!
