Peebles Isocurvature Baryon Cosmogony: Caption

Time Evolution

This landmark simulation was one of the first to model in all three spatial dimenstions the behavior of "ordinary" baryonic matter at the supercluster scale. However, dark matter particle-mesh technique was employed for this purpose, as an approximation for modelling gas dynamics. The resolution is fairly low, permitting modelling only of large-scale structures beyond even the size of galaxy clusters. Two movies are shown: the first depicts the time evolution of the volume modelled; the second, a slice through the simulated volume corresponding to a redshift of zero, i.e. the appearance of the universe today, as predicted by the model. The results are directly comparable to observations of large-scale structures via red-shift surveys of the cosmos.
