Galactic Odyssey Movie: text

Recombination

The movie presented here shows the formation of stable, atomic matter, principally hydrogen and helium. The universe has cooled sufficiently such that photons no longer possess sufficient energy to dissociate electrons from the atomic nuclei to which they 're bound. Once decoupled from matter, photons are free to travel throughout the universe. The cosmos, once hot, dense and opaque, is now transparent to electromagnetic radiation. This transformation, which is thought to have taken place over about a mill ion years, is represented here by the change in the background from blue to black.
